About five years ago, I started out on this crazy journey to become an entrepreneur. I didn’t know what I was going to do, but I knew that I couldn’t keep working for terrible bosses and giving of myself in situations that were not replenishing me.
I tried becoming an influencer and did pretty well, garnering over $5,000 in books and another $5,000 in yoga clothing and gear, in exchange for positive reviews. But I wasn’t able to monetize it and I didn’t see a sustainable career in it because it wasn’t me. I’m not saying that you can’t make a living through becoming a social media influencer, it just wasn’t the path for me – and I definitely wasn’t ready for it skill-wise. I did develop a relationship with someone that would become one of my clients in the future. During this time I got and left a job because of a toxic work environment. But also, at this time, met one of my biggest mentors in life and business.
Having been there and done that, I’m happy to help guide you on the path to becoming one.
I tried taking some of my other passions and turning them into a career. I wrote a novel…that still is unpublished, but I plan to take some time on our upcoming vacation to really edit and refine it. I tried knitting and selling my knits at craft shows, online and it started to work, but I wasn’t confident enough in my skills at the time to ask for enough for my products to make it into a full time business. During this time, I got and lost another job. A boss that promised to be very supportive and positive, wasn’t so – and admittedly I was having trouble staying interested in the very technical and niche products. It was also during this time that I started a charitable project using my knitting and marketing skills to raise donated items for local animal shelters.
The project helped sustain me, and hone my skills even more.
Then I started my last job, which a nice job and really gave me both a lot of autonomy and responsibility, but it wasn’t working for myself and by this time, I was really invested in starting my own business. At this point, I started to take a step back, and think about my strengths and what I enjoy doing on a day to day basis. I love writing and I love sharing, I love engaging and helping other people learn. So I started to take my marketing skills and offer them to some startups and nonprofits for free. I met some great people and started to really help them, I helped them so much that they wanted more of my time – but I didn’t have anymore time to give. So they offered me a job. The catch, they were overseas and we had two weeks to get set up and be at an international conference. We decided that I would start my own business and invoice them. So I had the structural foundation and the financial stability to start my own business.
I had done it – but I had done it by trial and effort, and loads of failure. My daily work with McKeating Solutions is to take my branding and marketing skills, and my experiences in becoming an entrepreneur to help others take the steps and make the journey to entrepreneurship. Yes these are paid services, but in order for you to really sit down and put in the effort and for me to be able to continue to help you and others like you, we need to structure our relationship like this. BUT that doesn’t mean that I don’t love to help and want to build a sense of community.
